BATESVILLE STUNS CHICKASAWS, 41-6
It was apparent from the opening kickoff return that things weren't going to go the Blythevile Chickasaws way on Friday when they fell 41-6 to the Batesville Pioneers and dropped their first 5A-East Conference loss of the season.
Blytheville received the game's opening kickoff which Amani McChristian fielded but fumbled away just a few steps later. It took the Pioneers just five plays to score from the Blyethivlle 25 with Kadar Floyd capping the short drive with a 3-yard touchdown run then Alejandro Medina kicked the extra point with 9:55 left in the first quarter and the Pioneers never trailed the rest of the way.
The Chickasaws responded with their only scoring drive of the night, going 66 yards on 12 plays. Quarterback Jaheim Carter capped the drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Corey Weatherspoon on a fourth-and-play. However the 2-point conversion failed, leaving the score at 7-6 with 5:33 left in the opening stanza.
Batesvile scored its second touchdown early in the second quarter when quarterback Hayden Childers connected with Karson Douglas for a 39-yard touchdown pass as the 10:57 mark. Medina's kick made it 14-6.
The rest of the second quarter, Blytheville could not move the ball while Batesville kept scoring. The Pioneers made it 21-6 with 4:13 left in the first half on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Childers to Tevin Whitaker with another Medina PAT. After that play the Chickasaws were whistled for two unsportsmanlike penalties enabling the Pioneers to kick off from the Blytheville 30. The Pioneers then recovered the onside kick and four plays later scored another touchdown when Kadar Floyd punched it in from two yards out to make it 28-6. And with 19 seconds left in the first half, Medina kicked a 19-yard field goal for a 31-6 Batesville lead at intermission.
Blytheville attempted an onside kick to start the second half but kicked it out of bounds and the Pioneers started at the Chickasaw 48. From there the Pioneers needed nine plays to reach the end zone once again, this time on a 38-yard run by Floyd to make it 38-6.
A 30-yard field goal by Medina with 7:57 left in the fourth quarter put Batesvile up 41-6, making the game a mercy rule as the clock ran out from there.
Blytheville finished with 186 total yards on offense, 129 on the ground. Jermel Woods led with 18 carries for 116 yards. Carter completed 5-of-15 passes for 57 yards.
The Chickasaws not only turned the ball over four times but continually shot themselves in the foot ith penalties, drawing 15 flags for 173 yards, a good chunk of those were in the form of 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalities.
Batesville finished with 248 total yards, Floyd carried the ball 24 times for 112 yards while Childers completed 5-of-12 for 91 yards.
