CHICKS REMAIN IN LOGJAM FOR SECOND WITH WIN OVER PARAGOULD
The Blytheville Chickasaws celebrated Senior Night with a 41-21 win over Paragould, Friday night, at Haley Field.
With the game in hand with 3:22 to play, Blytheville head coach Ben Fisher called timeout, pulled his senior defenders off the field and hugged them one by one.
The Chicks (4-5, 4-2 5A-East) travel to Forrest City, Friday night, in the final regular season game. Week 10 will decide playoff positioning in the 5A-East Conference.
There is a logjam for second as Blytheville, Wynne, Valley View and Batesville are all tied going into the final week of the regular season. Valley View travels to Batesville and Wynne goes to Nettleton in the regular season finale.
Wynne (5-4, 4-2) edged Forrest City (4-5, 3-3), 35-34, Friday night. Valley View (6-3, 4-2) topped league leader Nettleton (8-1, 5-1), 14-12, while Batesville (4-5, 4-2) defeated Greene County Tech (2-9, 0-6), 39-7.
In the final regular season home game, the Chicks used the big play to overcome a lopsided time of possession, as Paragould’s offense had the ball for 32:32 of the 48-minute game.
Paragould opened the game with an 11-play, 86-yard scoring drive that took nearly half of the first quarter.
Paragould’s David Williams opened the scoring with a five-yard touchdown run to put the Rams on top, 7-0, with 6:47 left in the first quarter.
The Rams (0-9, 0-6 5A-East) attempted an onside kick, but Blytheville’s Corey Weatherspoon scooped it up and raced 50 yards up the PHS sideline to put the Chicks on the board. The two-point conversion was no good, keeping it 7-6.
Late in the first quarter, Blytheville’s Zy’kerrien Kennedy pounced on a Paragould fumble to give the Chicks the ball at the Ram 42. On the next play, quarterback Jaheim Carter hit Weatherspoon with a 42-yard touchdown strike. Carter ran in the two-point conversion to give Blytheville a 14-7 lead with 33 seconds left, and the Chicks would not trail again.
On the ensuing drive, Blytheville’s Jaylnn Dye picked off Paragould’s Cole Doke and returned it 82 yards to paydirt. Carter hit Weatherspoon on the two-point conversion to increase the advantage to 22-7 with 9:26 left in the half.
The Chicks nearly had another pick-6, but the 95-yard return was negated by a flag. Carter was picked off two plays later, ending the threat. The Chicks took a 22-7 lead into the locker room, despite the offense having the ball for only 4:57 in the first two quarters.
After recovering a Chickasaw fumble to start the second half, Paragould cut the lead to 22-14 on a Brayden Hines one-yard touchdown run with 7:13 left in the third.
Blytheville answered with an 11-play, 54-yard drive, converting two fourth downs on the series.
Carter’s one-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal gave Blytheville a 28-14 lead with 2:01 left in the third.
Blytheville added to its lead with 10:00 to play when Kylen Wells scored from five yards out to up the lead to 34-14.
Weatherspoon’s three-yard touchdown run with 3:28 left made it 41-14, and Fisher pulled his starters. Paragould’s Joseph Grooms set the final score with a four-yard touchdown run with 2:01 left.
Blytheville finished with 277 total yards, including 157 on 28 rushing attempts. Jermel Woods led the way with 15 carries for 96 yards. Carter was 6 of 11 for 120 yards, the touchdown and interception.
Paragould finished with 300 total yards, with 266 coming on 57 rushing attempts.
