CHICKS KNOCK OFF 6A POWER JONESBORO IN THRILLER
Blytheville Chickasaws senior guard Tony Newmy, Jr. ended the game with a deep three-pointer with less than three seconds to go to stun the fourth-ranked team in Arkansas and defending 6A State Champion Jonesboro Hurricane, 59-58, Tuesday night on the Chicks' Senior Night.
BHS (14-11,10-7) led JHS all the way until there was 2:09 left in the game, when JHS guard Bleyton Williams' and-one putback tied the game at 54.
The Chicks led 32-26 at the half.
BHS head coach McKenzie Pierce said this win over his alma mater was due and that is was a good way to send the Blytheville seniors off with a victory.
Pierce also mentioned that the Chicks played for Assistant Coach Bill Tyer who missed Tuesday with the flu.
Newmy led the Chicks with 19 points. Trey Jamison chipped in 17 points and Jareous Haynes added 12 points. Winston Peace also contributed eight points.
The Lady Chickasaws were defeated by the Lady Hurricanes, 55-39, Tuesday. JHS led 29-21 at the half. Laurissa Campbell led the Lady Chicks with 17 points.
The Chickasaws and Lady Chickasaws will wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Marion and then look to start the 5A East District tournament next week.
