BIG WIN OVER JHS GIVES CHICKASAWS MOMENTUM
The Blytheville Chickasaws (15-11, 11-7) finished the regular season strong with three big wins against the Forrest City Mustangs (7-18, 4-14), reigning 6A state champion Jonesboro (20-5, 14-4) and the Marion Patriots (13-13, 7-11).
The Chickasaws defeated the Mustangs, 61-60, on February 9 and thanks to a deep three-pointer by senior guard Tony Newmy, Jr. Tuesday the Chickasaws defeated the Hurricane, 59-58, at the buzzer.
The Hurricane finished last season with a perfect 32-0 record and were crowned the 6A state champions. After the buzzer-beater, fans stormed the court in excitement, and a video of the game-winner has gone viral on social media.
“First thing I can say is we were due,” Chickasaws head coach McKenzie Pierce said. “I mean we’ve lost six or seven two-, three- or four-point games. I just can’t tell you how many layups we’ve missed, right at the end of games, that would have sealed it for us. Like I’ve told our guys we’ve got to stay resilient. These guys haven’t quit, haven’t put their heads down. I’ve told them it’s February now, we didn’t want those breaks in November, December or January; we want them now. We want to start playing our best basketball now, so obviously, that was a good win for us. Kind of a statement win. We’ve been a really good ball team for the two years I’ve been here, but we’ve had a hard time getting a statement win and that’s a really good club. I just can’t say enough about my seniors. It was senior night and they came out and said, ‘we don’t care who we are playing, we are going to play our basketball’. That’s the biggest thing, sometimes, I’ve struggled with is we go out and look at their jerseys and think these guys are superior…Can’t say enough about our seniors. What a sweet way to send them out last time they play in front of their home crowd. The biggest thing though is we can’t be satisfied with this. It’s a great win, pretty cool. It hadn’t really set in it’s my school that I graduated high school from and fourth time coaching against them and this is my first victory against them, but I’m sure one day I’ll probably enjoy it more than right now. But I’m definitely more focused on the Blytheville Chickasaws and happy for my guys and for these fans that have stuck with us and came out and supported. We don’t want to be satisfied here; the most important days are ahead of us so we just have to continue to get better each and every single day.”
Following the huge win over the Hurricane, Blytheville knocked off another 6A school.
BHS hung on to a lead down the stretch Thursday night to finish the regular season with a 69-64 victory over the Patriots.
The Chickasaws will look to start the 5A-East District Tournament Monday as the second seed at Batesville. They are expected to face the seventh seed Paragould Rams. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. BHS leads the season series 2-0 against Paragould, as the Chicks defeated the Rams 52-29 on December 15 and 61-40 on January 23.
Pierce said, "We know we are the two-seed. Really don't know and won't know until 10 o'clock [Friday] a 100 percent who we are playing. We anticipate it being Paragould. Obviously, they are playing pretty good right now, even though they are the seventh seed. They're well coached. Like I said that could change with a couple of scenarios, but I anticipate it being Paragould. Everything to this point is irrelevant now. It's one game at a time. Who plays the best that night; survive and advance."
The seventh-seeded Lady Chickasaws are set to face the second-seeded GCT Lady Eagles Monday at 4 p.m.
The Lady Eagles lead the season series 2-0 over the Lady Chickasaws. GCT defeated the Lady Chickasaws, 76-44, on January 2 and 57-30 on January 30.
