Chicks, Lady Chicks defeat Forrest City

CHICKS, LADY CHICKS DEFEAT FORREST CITY

The Blytheville Chickasaws improved their record to 9-7 overall and 5-3 in conference after defeating 5A-East rival the Forrest City Mustangs, 64-59, Saturday night. The game was scheduled for Friday but due to inclement weather was played on Saturday. BHS jumped out to a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter, but the Mustangs climbed back to trail by four points with a minute left in the first. The Chickasaws led 14-8 after the first quarter. FCHS senior forward Ed Sparks’s layup with a little over six minutes left in the second quarter cut the Chickasaws lead to three points. Forrest City trailed by a point with 1:30 left in the first half but the Chickasaws ended the half with a three-pointer from senior Tony Newmy Jr. to lead 26-20. The Chicks outscored the Mustangs, 21-16, in the third quarter to lead, 47-36, heading into the final quarter of play. The Mustangs won the final quarter, 23-17, and Dyveon Williams drained a three-point basket with four seconds left. But Chickasaws Michael Caruthers and Newmy went four for four in the final 20 seconds of the game, as the Chicks came away with a 64-59 victory. Leading the way for the Chickasaws was Newmy with a game-high 18 points. Caruthers and Winston Peace both chipped in 10 points. Sparks led the way for the Mustangs with 16 points. FCHS junior Randal Moore added 11 points. The Chickasaws were scheduled to head to Jonesboro to take on the reigning 6A state champion Hurricanes Tuesday night, but the game has been rescheduled for Wednesday because of inclement weather. Lady Chicks 61, Forrest City 50 The Blytheville Lady Chickasaws (4-12, 2-7) outlasted the Forrest City Lady Mustangs in Friday’s make-up game on Saturday, 61-50. The Lady Chickasaws led 26-22 heading into the half. A big second half from BHS held off the Lady Mustangs for a 61-50 final. Leading the Lady Chickasaws to victory was Alindavia Lockett with 17 points. Shaquita Williams chipped in 12 points, Laurissa Campbell and Sandi Gillespie both added 11 points. FCHS sophomore Ta’Kyla Allen led all scorers with 19 points. Lady Mustang junior guard Kourtney Blanchett chipped in 11 points and sophomore forward Shatayla Boyland added five points.
