CHICKS KNOCK OFF VALLEY VIEW
The Blytheville Chickasaws (10-9, 6-5) bounced back from Wednesday’s 71-37 loss on the road to the reigning 6A state champion Jonesboro Hurricanes with a 56-48 victory over another Jonesboro team, the Valley View Blazers, Friday night at Chickasaw Gymnasium.
The Chicks were without senior guard Michael Caruthers against the Blazers but classmates Tony Newmy and Jaurous Haynes had big nights, along with junior guard Ja’Quon Fowler dialing it up from three all night.
Newmy started the night with a big three 15 seconds into the game. Newmy connected on another Chickasaws three-point basket with six minutes in the first half to give the Chicks a 9-2 lead over the Blazers.
BHS sophomore Curtis Smith drew a charge with 1:50 left in the first quarter. The Chicks finished the night by taking four charges.
The Chicks led 12-4 at the end of the first quarter. Haynes excited the crowd after slamming home a Demareon Garvin missed floater with two-hands at the 6:37 mark that forced VVHS to call a timeout.
BHS head coach McKenzie Pierce was warned to stay in the box with 1:10 remaining in the half. The Chicks led by six points heading into halftime. Chickasaw junior Winston Peace tipped a Blazer pass and ended the play with a one-handed tomahawk dunk with 7:20 left in the third.
The third quarter was Fowler’s quarter as he sank three three-pointers. The final three-pointer ended the third quarter and gave the Chickasaws a 34-30 lead. On the play several Blazer players were on the floor, along with a Chickasaw player. In between the break the Blazers head coach Jason Manchester had words with the referee. However, there was no technical or ejection.
VVHS 6-foot-8 center Reed Graddy tied the game at 34 with a two-handed slam with six minutes remaining.
The Chickasaws, however, finished the night hitting 10 of 12 down the stretch and defeating the Blazers 56-48.
Newmy led the Chickasaws to victory with 20 points. Fowler finished with 19 points and Haynes chipped in eight points. The Chicks begin a two-game road trip next week as they travel to Paragould on Tuesday and West Memphis on Friday.
Valley View 45, Lady Chicks 35
The Blytheville Lady Chickasaws (2-9, 4-14) held a lead most of the night before trailing late and losing to the Valley View Lady Blazers, 45-35, Friday. The Lady Chickasaws held leads of 9-4 after the first quarter and 22-12 at the half; however, back-to-back three-pointers from the Lady Blazers with a little over two minutes left in the third sparked a Lady Blazer 27-10 run in the final quarter and 2:20 left. VVHS and the Lady Chickasaws were tied at 29 heading into the final quarter. Shaquita Williams led the Lady Chickasaws with 10 points. Laurissa Campbell and Terika Dillard both finished with nine points apiece.
The Lady Chickasaws began a two-game road trip next week as they travel to Paragould on Tuesday and West Memphis on Friday.
